Ben's Story

Ben was gifted to our family as a buy-one-get-one package in May of 2009, an identical twin. We felt like we had won the lottery! TWO healthy babies at once! From the beginning, he was my smiler. Easy-going, let-me-just-do-it-for-my-brother-and-save-everyone-the-hassle kinda kid. A joy.

For the first four-and-a-half years, he was a healthy kid. Tough, actually. He never complains about anything. An optimist. Even when his sister broke his toy and his brother yelled at her, Ben corrected him, saying, "But Jack, now we have TWO!"

But in the middle of January 2014, Ben started complaining of headaches. Headaches? How does a four-year-old even know what a headache is? This usually accompanied severe stomach pains. And you could tell they were painful. His only relief was to get sick, sleep and then he'd wake up and eat - a happy man! Then the headaches started coming more frequently. And lasting longer. We went to the pediatrician: sinus infection, they said. They sent us home with an antibiotic. But it didn't seem to help. We went to the ER: constipation. Then they prescribed a stronger antibiotic. Still, no change. Finally, nine days after the first headache, my husband insisted we visit the ER again. And this time, we wouldn't leave until we had answers.

That evening revealed the unimaginable. A tumor. A big one. The size of a pear. And it had overtaken Ben's brain. And it looked aggressive. An MRI, brain surgery with an amazing team of pediatric neurosurgeons and a pathology report confirmed: our healthy little boy had a cancerous brain tumor. Stage IV Glioblastoma. An adult cancer. That only 0.00002% of the population gets. And it was likely that he only had a few more months before it overtook him completely.

This week, February 25th, we begin an aggressive treatment plan of both radiation and chemotherapy at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, right here in Buffalo, NY. We are scared. We are intimidated by the scientific odds. But we are also people of faith. We believe that God has a higher purpose for our "mighty" Benjamin and that He will work a miracle in his life. Because God has never failed us. Not even once.

We have received an amazing amount of support from our family, friends, community, and people all around the world. We will always be indebted to the many prayers said on our behalf.

Thank you for walking this road with us. We are so grateful not to walk alone.

    3. I have stumbled upon this blog quite by accident and am so sad for this brave family! I immediately wondered if this wonderful family had considered nutrition and natural medicine in addition to traditional medicine and then say this! I couldn't agree more and you have nothing to loose. Cancer patients all share one thing, an acidic body. Perhaps your dear sons body needs to be returned to a more alkaline state. You are in my thoughts and prayers sweet Ben and your wonderful family.

    4. Don't know you, but my heart goes out. My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia this year. She and mom are at Children's hospital for another round of chemo today as my 4 year old and I keep updated on Facebook and saw your story. If I can offer any support I would.

    7. "How To Buy a Car", I think maybe you were 'supposed' to find this blog. Our God works in mysterious ways. Maybe it wasn't so much an accident. My prayers are with Little Ben and your entire family. I know God has him in His hands!

    8. Ben should qualify for a clinical trial. There are trials that are FDA approved high tech research trials that are 20 years ahead of conventional oncology. For example the Mayo clinic is injecting the measles vaccine into brain tumors, which liquifies the tumor quickly. It is safe, as it has been given to children in their MMR shots for over 50 years. Another trial injects nano particle iron into the brain tumor and the Radiologist run the patient through an MRI, which heats up the metal nano particles and cooks the tumor. My website is bio-targetedcancertreatments.com. I am a graduate student in cancer biology and I help cancer patients get into FDA approved research trials.

    9. Gerson Method does not work. Its healthy living for sure but it has no proven effectiveness against cancer especially advanced stage cancer. Just ask Steve Jobs if it worked since he chose it over a whipple procedure to cure his pancreatic cancer against his doctors wishes. Well, obviously it didn't work

  5. Please know this blog is not our "Window into your world"! Rather it is a "place in your path to journey alongside you". It's a privilege to pray, it is a pleasure to pray for specific needs. Humble are we---and steadfast! Got my boots on, I know this could get muddy but my heart's in it for the long haul!

  10. I am so very sorry to hear about your son. I don't know you, but came across your blog when a friend shared a link. I know a man who passed away from Glioblastoma Multiforme during the summer of last year. He was 29, had a one-year old son and a wife who is exceptionally strong. The two of them were very strong in their faith throughout the entire process, just like you, and while their outcome was not positive, I would encourage you to look up "Dustin Rhodes - The Fight Against Brain Cancer" on facebook. Rebecca continues to post updates on how she and her son are doing, memories of Dustin and she's really a shining example of how someone can trust God completely. She ends every post with "Trust in The Lord with all your heart." God bless, and good luck. I have a son who will be four in March, and just reading about what you are going through made my heart sink. I wish you nothing but the best.

  11. I saw your story through a friends FB feed. I am praying for you and your family. Your mindset is perfect and as someone who has been through extremely difficult trials, I an tell you that there is nothing like resting in the palm of the Lord's hand. We must choose to walk by faith and not be sight. It is our faith that sustains us. I would recommend this book/podcast series by James MacDonald: https://store.jamesmacdonald.com/p-2116-when-life-is-hard.aspx

  15. I am praying. I am praying so hard for Ben. We don't know each other, but I've been following your story through FB, and I was absolutely devastated and sodden with tears when I read the results of Ben's surgery. I think about his light and joy, and his brother and sister, and his strong parents, and I pray so very hard that Ben heals. I also have a 4 year old, and they are an amazing gift. I am so very sorry you all have to go through this. Ben is clearly a lucky little guy to have such a strong, thoughtful family. My heart reaches out to you all. 42. Hi Ben. My name is Mike. I run an online Facebook support group named " Curing Cancer with a Smile." Tonight I got up a little energy to read a few posts and someone posted your blog. That is what brought me here. Now about me. I have my Group, I also run two online blogs, and oh yeah, I also have stage IV GBM. I am 52 and have survived for a little over 5 years now. It has been quite the struggle and to this point I have survived the odds, but it is getting harder and I am now in Hospice. I guess what drew me here was knowing what I have gone thru, it breaks my heart in two to thank of a 4 year old having to go thru what I have. Life isn't fair. But what I have also learned thru this is that it isn't about how long, but what we do with it. You keep fighting, it's hard, but you can do this. With the Love and support of your parents, your friends and of course the Lord, this can also be fought. Just remember this, do it with a smile !

Live life, love deep and leave the complicated stuff to GOD. We can not change GOD's plan, we don't have to like it or agree with it, however he can help us through the journey if we give him the chance.
Storming the heavens with prayers for your family.

  46. My father died of GBM in 2009 after a valiant 20 month fight. I did a lot of research on GBM at the time and concluded that a dendritic cell vaccine (DC Vax) was the most effective treatment available in clinical trial. I think it still is and a company called Northwest Biotherapeutics should eventually get FDA approval for their DC Vax. I tried, but was unsuccessful in getting my father into a DC vaccine clinical trial. We had to settle for using Avastin which helped prolong his life, but only kept the glioblastoma in check for a while. Duke University has a great brain tumor center, but I hope you can get Ben into a good clinical trial. My prayers go out to you and him. It's a rough diagnosis, but nothing is impossible with God. Best of luck to you!

I am just a friend of a friend of a friend, a veritable stranger, but after reading today that Ben has Ben has been sent home on hospice, I felt compelled to ask whether you have considered a second opinion from Boston Children's Hospital? My nephew Owen was born with his brain growing outside of his skull and was given a 0% chance of survival by a very elite neurosurgical team at our local children's hospital. He was sent home on hospice with his parents, at only a week old. His parents, in deperation, sent his films to Boston Children's Hospital, and a team there said "yes" where everyone else had said no. They sucessfully removed Owen's huge encephalocele and he is a healthy 3 month old today. I know you are waiting on a miracle. That said, I want to share a portion of his message with you because I think it is a good example of how we should always pray - not begging God to heal, but speaking with authority! (you can read the entire post at truthworks.org)

I would very much appreciate your prayers for me and my family. But, please; no pitiful prayers. Don’t go before God like a beggar asking Him to do something that you not sure if He will do it or not. That insults Him; and does me little good. Ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit and compassion, so that can rise to occasion and speak to this mountain in the name of Jesus.
Take up your authority as a follower of Jesus, and fellow-soldier of faith in this battle against the powers of darkness. Draw your sword, stand your ground, and speak with authority over the power of the enemy. Tell him to back off. Rescue me from the field where I have fallen and bring me back to the tents of mercy I may mend and recover from my wounds.
The Lord willing I will do so, and soon be standing by your side on the front lines once again!

  85. Beloved sister and family in the LORD. I have no words of wisdom that hasn't been posted already. All I have are my prayers and warm, healing, happy thoughts.
Abba, Father, You are the Most High God. Thank you, Jesus for leaving Your throne of grace to pay for our sin debt. Thank You Father for Your provision, even normal events that we take for granted. LORD, I come to Your Throne of Grace not for myself, but for Ben and his family. Abba, as you know, your baby is hurting and is very ill with a tumor in his head. His mom and dad, brother and sister are under a tremendous amount of stress and strain. Please, LORD, You said that when two or more are gathered in Your name, there You are in the midst. I beg You, Father, to please shower them with Your mercy, grace, healing and comfort that surpasses all understanding. Please be with the doctors, nurses and healthcare staff. Give them the wisdom and knowledge to bring about healing. Please, LORD, heal this little boy and make him well. We'll be sure to give You all the praise, honor and glory for it. In Jesus' most precious name I pray, Amen <3

  86. We don't know you, but I've been praying for you and your family. Tonight as my 5 year old son Sam was saying his prayers I told him we need to add Ben to our list, he wanted to know about him so I told him a little and showed him some of your pics, he thought it was so cool how his twin was helping take care of him, and then he said we should go from Fl to New York on the plane to say hi and tell him we hope he feels better. He asked God to make the tumor smaller and say bye bye to it. Sam won't forget, Ben is on his prayer list from now on.....Angie and Sam

  89. My husband was diagnosed with the same tumor this January. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your beautiful boy. No child should have to go through this. We have faith in the healing powers of God and pray He heals your Ben. We are currently at the Cleveland Clinic with an amazing group of doctors. Push to find out what clinical trials Ben qualifies for after the standard of treatment. An angel sent us a book from the Musella Foundation called Brain Tumor Guide for the Newly Diagnosed. It is so very informative and also highlights amazing survivor stories. It may help you as well. We as a family have decided to live life one day at a time. We cannot worry about the what ifs if we want to move forward each day. Matthew 6:34 spoke volumes to us one Sunday at church in February "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." We pray Ben tolerates treatments well and lives everyday happy as each child should.

  91. I've been following Ben's story, and today while on my laptop, my 8 year old son looked over my shoulder and said, "is that Ben?". I was a little surprised, because I hadn't talked to him about Ben. I said, "yes, it is! How do you know Ben?" He explained that his whole school has been praying for him. He attends St. John Lutheran in North Tonawanda. I was so moved with this, and proud of how mature my son was while talking about Ben. He wants Ben to know that even though he has never met him, he loves him. We are thinking of him and praying for him and his whole family. Christine & Max, Wilson NY

I will continue to pray that a miracle will happen soon for your family.

  114. I would look through these comments and research these different methods of treatment mentioned. I cannot help but think of the story of Moses when he led the people to water in the desert. God had led them to bitter water, but also gave Moses the stick to make it sweet. God has led you to bitter water, but perhaps there is a stick in here to make it sweet, so don't turn down opportunity if it comes. I believe that God does work miracles, but I also believe that He wants us all to take the opportunities that He gives us. My prayers are with your family,

  116. I have been praying for Ben and your family since I started following your blog 2 weeks ago. Your faith strengthens mine, your heartache lays heavy on my heart and in my prayers. I have to believe (for my own faith) that Jesus' words are true..."When two or more are gathered in My name there I am in their midst."
Like so many others I wish I had words of comfort for you and your family. I wish I could take away your pain. When praying the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, I often think of Our Lady's unimaginable pain watching her Son suffer. I pray that God restore Ben's health but as always that His will be done.

  142. Your familys' story caught me off guard, I clicked a link on facebook and now my heart is saddened. Tears of happiness and sadness have fell from my eyes for your family. I know you receive many posts so I won't be offended if this gets overlooked.

I'm laying here in bed trying to not read anything and everything about your family, see I work third shift and just made it home from work 3 hours ago. I'm exhausted, but I have a sister in Christ who is losing a child and I just cannot stop and spend a few more minutes to encourage her and her husband. Living by faith is not always easy seeing that we are made of flesh and sometimes our flesh doesn't compute things not seen. You two are a shining example of Christians. Believing that the will of God will be done and either way it's for our good. God knew us before we were born. He knew how many hairs are on our head, he knows our time of birth and our time of death, but death is only of the flesh, because to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. And what a glorious day it wil be for all of us once we are present with the Almighty God. Your son will be welcomed into the Kingdom of God, where allvoices are lifted up to praise His name, Ben will be whole again. Totally restored!

My family, my children, my church, we all will be praying for your family. When two or more are gathered together He is in the midst. We will call upon Him to let His perfect will be done. We all cry for you, rejoice with you and admire your strength and courage through your Job moment.

  143. I pray for you and your family. As seen through the eyes of a young 4 year old like Ben, "Heaven is for Real." Love, comfort and strength to you.

  145. Praying for you all as I write this. Loosing a child is hard. I lost my daughter and I know your pain. There is no pain that compares. I am so glad you know the Lord. Without him there is no way I would have endured to pain. It is only by drawing from his strength that one can get through such a time. Yesterday was her birthday. She has been gone 2 1/2 years and the emptiness is still there, but I know she is in heaven with her Lord and Savior. The hope we have in Christ is such a blessing. When Ben inters heaven he will be transported from your arms to the arms of Christ. As happy and content as he is in this world, it will be magnified beyond comprehension in the next. Draw from the strength Christ willingly supplies.

No one on this earth but you and God truly can understand the pain and the emotions you must feel. Thats why you have to continue to lean on him for strength...courage..understanding and peace. God must need another special angel to join my son Mason and
all the other babies he cares for in Heaven. You are incredible for even being able to write this blog and share this story. I will continue to ask God to watch over you and your family and for your sweet baby boy.

  151. Wow, what a wonderful little boy. I can't imagine what it would be like for me to watch my daughter struggle with an adult cancer. However, I do know what it is like to have had brain surgery. I am a Christian and friend of Karen Pustulka. I will pray for Ben and your whole family! God bless you as you deal with this unimaginable trial. When I was recovering from my surgery it really puts into perspective what is important in life. It is all about relationships. The most important being the one a person has with Jesus Christ. The parent-child relationship is another very important one. You are a very loving family. That was so sweet when Ben said after the toy broke, "But now we have two!" He already has the ability to see the best in a situation. That, along with the faith you have and the prayers of those around you, will make a difference. I am not sure why God spared me when I almost died, but if he had not spared me then there would have been a reason for that, too. Whether we live or we die we do everything for the Lord. God be with you and your family and especially little Ben right now. Peace, Kristi Dement

  153. Prayers for peace, strength and comfort for you family. I've never met your family, but I can feel a glimpse of your pain as a parent myself. I think as parents we are geared to deal with health issues for ourselves, but never prepared for something that is completely out of our hands for our children, our little blessings. As your faith is tested, try to remember the blessing you have had for 4 years rather than the years that you feel robbed. The pain wont disappear. Instead of thinking of him every day it might become every 3rd day, and in years maybe once a week. Allow the pain to come, but don't let it consume you. Live in the blessing that was and the blessing that are so that you do not miss them while they are all present. Don't forget you too are a blessing to others in your family. Allow them to feel comfort, peace and even joy through you as well. Pray for the miracles, but live for the blessings. Stephanie Deveau (Redding, CA)

  154. My name is Whitney Madrigal. I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My heart is so sad for you guys right now. I can't fathom what you all are dealing with right now. Can't fathom at all. Just wanted to offer this to you.Have you ever watched the documentary "Burzynski"? Dr. Burzynski has a clinic in Texas, and he has supposedly had amazing success with some children with rare brain tumors through his alternative treatment. I would definitely suggest at least watching the documentary (it also has a sequel). My husband and I found it fascinating and quite convincing. If I had a child with a rare tumor, I know that I would at least give this guy a closer look. The first patient being testified about in the documentary, also was a twin coincidentally. Anyway, just wanted to pass on to you what information/hope I have come across. God be with you and your precious, precious little son. Keep faith. The fact that you are keeping faith, is an Amazing example to the rest of us.

    Sincerely,
    Whitney

  157. To Ben and his family,
I stumbled upon Ben's story, your story, today as someone on my facebook page shared it. It hit way too close to home. Seven years ago I lost my 52 year old husband, my soul mate and father of my two beautiful boys to Glioblastoma. Yes, this is an adult disease, and it is not right that it should strike a 4 year old. It is a dread disease and, reading your blog was like traveling back to those last days. Last August, I lost my 22 year old son Michael when he succumbed to injuries he sustained when a fire broke out in our family home. My 25 year old son Matt was able to escape and suffered only minor injuries. I miss my baby every single minute of every day, but I know he is with his dad and our heavenly father. What you are going through no parent should EVER have to endure. I had to make the difficult decision to take Michael off life support and it will haunt me forever. I want you to know that I am praying for Ben, praying for you all...there are tough days ahead for sure, but I can tell you that there can be joy again...sometimes in very tiny little spurts, and as time goes by, the spurts turn into moments, and then minutes and are closer together. I know my baby is with me, I feel him all the time. I pray that you find peace in your heart and recognize that you will always have your boy with you.
    Blessings,
    Liz

  158. My heart is literally aching for you. Twenty-three years ago, our sweet 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. In reading your story, your road to a diagnosis could almost word for word be our same story. I'm saying a prayer for your precious Ben and for the rest of your family. May God bless you all.

  159. Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my Soul to keep. If I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my Soul to take. Angel wings silvery white, flying high above the sky. If I should see them before you do, I promise to wave good-bye to you.

  161. Have you seen this? I just wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I didn't pass it on. I don't want to give false hope but I just saw an article about a young woman (20) who survived a recurrent glioblastoma when she agreed to be the first participant in this clinical trial. I believe it is happening at duke university. If this is something you have already looked into.... I am so sorry, and I will be thinking about you in the coming days. I can't even comprehend what you must be going through. It is surely every parent's worst nightmare. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130521132122.htm

  163. I lost my daughter a year and a half ago and I know it is difficult to say goodbye. Life becomes numb. I read above that you have faith and believe God for a miracle and that God hasn't failed you yet. No matter what happens hold onto that Truth...he hasn't failed you and won't. He is with you through it all...including the low valleys. I don't mean this to sound simple or like you should always have a smile on but just to remind you that even if it ever feels that God has forgotten or failed you, that He hasn't. I've added you to my prayer list.

  164. Couldn't stop the tears from flowing as I read about your little Ben. Your strength and faith at this time, amazes me. Holding your family in prayerful thoughts. May Ben's suffering be taken away from him. Sending you love and prayers.

  167. I will pray for Ben. We know first hand what a diagnosis of cancer feels like. Our 5 year old granddaughter was diagnosed with leukemia this past October. God has been good to us and we have been told that it is a 96% cure rate for this ALL. Praying for a miracle for your Ben. I don't know what we would do without the prayers of family and friends. My little granddaughter told me one day, that even if Jesus does not heal her, she will be with Jesus when she dies. Then she said, if Jesus heals me, I will still be with him, because Jesus is coming soon. God, bless this entire family, and allow them to feel your presence in the midst of all this.

  170. Drinking Green Tea has properties that help in reducing or eliminating the cancer cells from producing and growing and also asparagus will eliminate the cancer cells all together. Look it up.

  171. This is Ethan. After my mother died of cancer 7 years ago, I started reading some on the subject. Two websites that could have an alternative cancer treatment are oasisofhope.com and dr-gonzalez.com. If conventional treatment has failed, there is nothing to lose with alternative nutritional based treatment.

  177. My thoughts and prayers are with your family today and always. I too lost a son Reid at the age of 2 years and 4 months from an astrocytic glioma brain tumor...also an adult tumor. Peace comes in knowing our children are happy and healthy in heaven and are waiting for use to join them. Tomorrow our precious little guy would have been 11 years old and we will honor him with sending 11 balloons to heaven and singing happy birthday. Big hugs to your family.
